Tsun Lok Dizi Enzemble Group

Tsun Lok Dizi Enzemble Group is the first music group with zhudi (bamboo flute) as the core instrument. Founded by Hong Kong dizi artist Chan King-tsun and officially registered in March 2005, the Group makes it its mission to promote Chinese dizi music and traditional Chinese cultural heritage.


The ensemble is configured in six parts: xiaodi, bangdi, qudi, dadi, bass and contra bass dizi; and has been challenging broader ranges in performing as well as creative works with the view to continue perfecting the music. With an innovative spirit, in addition to performing dizi and dongxiao music, the group also re-arranges Chinese and western orchestral music for dizi of different registers to perform, giving a brand new interpretation of the music. The group also a pioneer in using dizi solo accompanied by dizi to interpret many Chinese music classics like Lan-Hua-Hua, New Song of the Herdsmen, Birds in the Shade, Patrol on the Prairie, etc.


In the early days of establishment, the Group was honoured to have the valuable guidance and advice of leading dizi virtuosi in the field - Cheung Heung Wah, Tam Po Shek, Qu Xiang, Liu Sen, Du Rusong, Zhang Yanwu, Zhan Yongming, Zhang Weiliang, Li Zhen, Sun Yongzhi, Yan Jianmin, Lin Guzhen, Mei Wenkun et al and was able to perform with the highest standard.


Since its inception, the group has organised over 40 concerts, seminars, gatherings and masterclasses, and has been invited to perform in exchange activities in Singapore, Shenzhen, Taiwan, and Hangzhou. It has commissioned renowned composers to write new pieces, and they include Dr Mui Kwong Chiu, Dr Tang Lok Yin, Dr Ng King Pan, Dr Florence Cheung, Professor Clarence Mak, Alfred Wong and Slash Leung. In 2018, the group invited renowned dizi performing artist Qu Xiang to perform in Hong Kong for the first time; in 2019 the group participated in the 1st National Zhao Songting Dizi Invitation Competition and won the gold award in the Overseas Ensembles Section.


To help groom young dizi enthusiasts in primary and secondary schools, the group founded a junior group for young players to help improve their performance level as well as to pass on the art to the next generation. Since the inception of Tsun Lok Dizi Enzemble Group, dizi ensemble groups have increased in numbers in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Singapore and Hangzhou. It marked a new page for the development of the art of dizi.
