Wan Yun-an joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as a huqin virtuoso in 2016. A native of Taiwan, she learned to play the piano when she was very young, and started her training in erhu at the age of 9. She graduated from the Tainan National University of the Arts under the seven-year-coherent-college programme specializing in Chinese Music. She was awarded several scholarships throughout her studies. She majored in erhu under Wang Hung-Jen, Tsai Pei-Yi, Ku Feng-Yu, Ou Kuang-Hsun and Tsai Chen-Yu, and took piano as a minor subject under Ke Chin-Kan, Lu Han-Chen, Fu Pin-Yun, Tai Pi-Yin and Lu Han-Wen. She also minored in composition under Li Pei-Yi.
In 2015, Wan was invited by the National Chung Cheng University to perform erhu and share her experience in TEDxChungChengU. When she was in Taiwan, she had performed with many professional ensembles, including the Taiwan Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra, with which she toured different places. In 2014, she was the soloist performing Huabangzi of Hebei Province in the orchestra’s sizhu concert held at the Kaohsiung City Music Hall. In the same year, she gave a huqin solo recital at the Dream Land Concert Hall in Tainan, and was selected as one of the International Youth Ambassadors by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September, playing erhu in South Africa, Swaziland, Jordan, The Sultanate of Oman and Bahrain. While still at the University, Wan was a member of the Chinese String Orchestra of her department and performed in Beijing, Xiamen, Fujian, Hong Kong, Taipei and Tainan.
